Where is it?
Situated in the Indian Ocean between Mauritius and Madagascar. Known as the 7th province of France |
Why should I go there:
Famous for its active volcano Piton de La Fournaise, plenty of adventure sports (Canyoning, surfing, cycling, hiking, rafting, diving, deep sea fishing, para-gliding, scuba diving, horse riding, helicopter flips over the volcano). This is a little piece of Europe on Africa’s doorstep. It is not particularly a beach destination although there is a golden beach on the West coast of Reunion. Great restaurants offering French/Creole cuisine. |
How do I get there:
From France there are three airlines servicing the island and this is an 11 hour flight. From South Africa one to two flights weekly (seasonal) and it takes four hours. There are many regional flights between the Indian Ocean Islands. |
How long should we visit?
No less than a week to ten days if you really want to experience the true Reunion. We offer trips from 7 nights up to 14 nights depending on your interests. |
Is it safe?
Very. It is very first world and safety is of no concern. It is politically very stable and secure. |
What can I see there:
The volcano which is easily accessible on foot, the calderas (collapsed craters) which are very picturesque and each of the three are all different from each other. Quaint authentic towns with French and Creole influences. For nature lovers there are lovely forests and hiking trails. |
What is the food like:
Reunion is famous for its Carrie (curry) which is a traditional Creole dish served with rice. The carie is spicy stew/curry using either fish, lentils, beans etc. |
I don’t know where to start.
A good way is to explore the island at your own pace with a rental car and open voucher hotel system. This gives you the freedom to discover the small towns and hotels both at the coast and in the mountains. For the jet lagged there are some lovely beachy type hotels where you can relax and rejuvenate. If you tire of the beach then sign up for the day excursions that all the hotels offer. |
What is the language?
French is the norm followed by Creole and a small amount of English in most of the hotels. School french works wonders. |
Visas:
For non European passport holders a visa is required. Contact your local Consulate or Visa service for more information. From March 2013 South African passport holders will no longer be required to obtain a visa to travel to Reunion Island for short stays of up to 90 days. |
Health:
No malaria on the island. Yellow Fever certificates not necessary. The water is quite safe to drink. |
